This Saturday, March 23, if you witness the lights going out in the Platzl between 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., do not be concerned. The City of Kimberley is participating in the global event ‘Earth Hour’ by turning the street lights out in the Platzl and the main Platzl parking lot during the designated hour.

This event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is in its seventh year, helping to promote change in the world towards saving energy and becoming environmentally sustainable. Last year, Earth Hours broke records claiming to be the largest voluntary action for the environment, with more than 6,950 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories taking part.

The city is encouraging residents and businesses to participate by turning off their lights and other power sources during this same time on Saturday.

“We hope that if businesses are open during this time, they too will take leadership in this worthy cause and become innovative with ideas toward energy conservation,” said Mayor Ron McRae in a letter addressed to Platzl businesses. “For example, by switching off all non‐essential lighting, restaurants could have a candlelight dinner or stores could hold low‐light shopping experiences for their patrons, thus promoting conservation and sustainability awareness at the same time.”
