By S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac

A reminder to the local people who will be attending my retirement dinner April 16 at Copper Point Resort to bring food items to Cram the Boat to support the Columbia Valley Food Bank.

Couple of new scams being reported

Someone identifying themselves as being from the Immigration office wants you to know that you are in big trouble and may be deported from the country. Intended victim receiving the call was Canadian. The caller advises that for a sum of money they can work with the Canadian Embassy and you can avoid being deported. People are catching on to the Canada Revenue Scam and it looks like they have moved on to Immigration.

Another fellow reported contacting a number for B.C. medical and was transferred to another number. Male then received a text stating that he now owes money for the transfer. BC med and Telus were contacted and looking into this as they have no idea why such a text was sent.

Young man injured in fall

On Feb. 26, RCMP were called to assist BC Ambulance at a construction accident involving a 19-year-old male from the valley falling from a second storey and being seriously injured. Quick action by his fellow construction workers, first responders were able to get the male to the hospital where he was stabilized and then flown out. Worksafe B.C was notified and will be investigating.

Downtown disturbance

At 4:19 p.m. on Feb. 26, as a result of a disturbance complaint in front of Lambert-Kipp Pharmacy in downtown Invermere, a 64-year-old male from Radium Hot Springs was arrested for causing a disturbance and being drunk in public. The male was given a court date to answer to the charge of causing a disturbance.

Fairmont B&E

At 9:53 p.m. on Feb. 26, police attended to a break and enter complaint in the 6000 block of Columbia Ridge Drive in Fairmont Hot Springs. A garage was broken into that also gave access to a guest suite. Liquor was stolen as well as an attempt to steal a car.

DUI for 68-year-old

At 12:35 a.m. on Feb. 27, as a result of a routine check of a 2004 Volkswagon, a 68-year-old male was given an ASD demand where he blew a fail. The male was given a 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day vehicle impound.

Today/tomorrow

rcmp logo glossyToday I wake up the leader of men and women, in Command of a Detachment with all the responsibilities that come with the heavy burden of being responsible and accountable to the community I serve.

Tomorrow I wake up third in the hierarchy of three. Bev, Taz (the dog) and me. My first priority is to reclaim my Easy Boy chair in Golden that Taz has taken over for the last seven years, assert myself as second-in-command and reclaim my rightful place.

I will have my final say on April 16. I appreciate all the support I have received from the people I served here in the valley as well as Golden. Now my challenge is to look at Bev’s ‘to do list’ or go fishing. Hmmm…

No sudden moves please (the last story)

Last week I had a friend attend to the back parking lot where we park our police vehicles. This trusted friend was attending a meeting with myself and  in Golden. We were waiting for Grant to come out to the back parking lot but he was dragging his butt.

It was urgent that I depart while our friend jumps in with Grant in the unmarked Tahoe. The police vehicle I would be driving was to be left in Golden and I realized the shotgun was still left in the police car. I removed it from the locking device emptied the shotgun and handed it to my friend instructing him to give it to Grant as I have to leave now.

Clear instructions since our friend was in civilian clothes, not really known to the other officers working and kind of scruffy, that if any other officer other than Grant comes out the back door that it would be best not to make any sudden moves and to simply drop the shotgun to the ground. I then departed. If my friend meets me at our meeting I know things went well. If not, I know that I have the personality to make and meet new friends pretty fast.
