Community Futures reps enjoy Kimberley experience

Community Futures of BC held its annual conference in Kimberley from September 23 to 25.

With 140 delegates and spouses, the economic impact of the event to the community is conservatively estimated to be $61,000.

Wendy Smitka, a representative of the Provincial Board of Community Futures was beaming. “I was surprised by such a quality facility in a small town. Wonderful service, great food, excellent accommodations in a beautiful environment helps recharge your batteries and creates enthusiasm you bring back to your work,” she said, adding, “We wandered around downtown the first day of the conference. It was so touching the shops knew we were in town. We felt like friends being welcomed.”

The Community Futures network offers business and community development assistance through 34 offices throughout rural B.C. through a variety of business services.

In addition to golf, attendees had the opportunity to tour amenities in the city such as Marysville Falls (pictured), SunMine, and had a ‘howl at the moon’ party one night at the Nordic Centre.

Kimberley Chamber of Commerce Manager Mike Guarnery is a board member of Community Futures East Kootenay and helped to organize the conference.

According to Mike, “the economic impact of this event in the community is more than dining and accommodation, these people had a great time and will be back.”
