Cranbrook Canadian Tire moving

The Cranbrook Canadian Tire is moving to a new location that will create a triangle of similar stores for shoppers in the Key City.

City of Cranbrook Council May 12 unanimously approved a Highway Corridor Commercial Development Permit to allow for the construction of a new 71,777-square foot (gross area) retail building between McPhee Road and Theatre Road (next to Home Depot).

In addition, the site will feature an auto service centre and 10,000 square foot outdoor garden centre.

“This is really good news,” enthused Mayor Wayne Stetski, noting the 1800 McPhee Road address will mean Canadian Tire, Home Depot and Home Hardware are all within eyesight for shoppers.

Theatre - McPheeCoun. Diana J Scott said she is heartened to learn that the building applicant has agreed to help cover costs for a traffic light to be installed at the junction of McPhee and Theatre Roads.

“This kind of corporate responsibility is much appreciated,” she said.

While noting the move to a larger space is “excellent news” for Canadian Tire and city and regional shoppers, Coun. Sharon Cross asked if city storm sewers could handle the addition of another large parking surface so close to the current box store/mall lots.

City planning staff said run-off has been considered, with dry wells and overflows planned.

As for what could happen with the old site (where the current Canadian Tire is located), that remains to be seen, said Mayor Stetski.

“I guess we’ll have to wait and see,” he said.
