Four EK students off to Skills for Life Summit

Students from throughout B.C. are getting the chance of a lifetime, including four from the East Kootenay.

The Ministry of Education, the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and Pacific NorthWest LNG have partnered to bring 122 students to Richmond for the BC Lions Skills for Life Summit.

Among those selected to attend from School District No. 5 are Brandon Archibald and Ty Arscott of Cranbrook’s Laurie Middle School and from School District No. 6 are Wolfgang Nicholos and Wallace Warbrick from Invermere’s David Thompson Secondary School.

Minister of Education Peter Fassbender will join students as they Dec. 1 tour WorkBC’s ‘Find Your Fit’ skills and trades stations at the Richmond Oval to get a head-start to hands-on-learning through interactive demonstrations of professions like welding, carpentry, heavy equipment operating, truck driving, and even accounting. The students will also participate in leadership and team building workshops with BC Lions players. Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, Shirley Bond, will also attend the event.

The BC Lions are also hosting the students at the 102nd Grey Cup game the day before the event on Nov. 30.
