Local man injured in grizzly attack

A Cranbrook man was airlifted to a Calgary hospital last night with non-life threatening injuries following a grizzly attack in the Spray Irrigation fields area, Cranbrook RCMP reported on their Twitter account.

Police also asked in their tweet for residents to stay clear of the Spray Irrigation/Pritchard Road areas while the BC Conservation Officer Service search for the bear.

Compounding the search difficulty is the fact the bear was injured during the attack with the thus-far unnamed man and reportedly had two cubs with it at the time of the attack.

According to local radio station B-102/B-104, CO Joe Caravetta reported, “We have a predator attack team of Conservation Officers out there assessing the area and searching for the injured grizzly bear. We are asking for hunters and members of the public to refrain from entering that area, which is located across from Pritchard Road, down by the Kootenay River bottom.”

A social media update by the attacked man’s step-mother notes he was flown to Calgary to see a nerve specialist and plastic surgeon. He has experienced nerve damage to the left side of his face but his eyes are fine.

His step-mom concluded: “One very lucky young man.”
