Northwood home razed in suspicious blaze

Firefighters with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) this morning responded to a structure fire in Northwood Estates, off 30th Avenue North (above the Kinsmen Quad Ball Park).
CFES responded to the call at 6:30 a.m. with one engine and three firefighters, with 16 additional firefighters and equipment responding a short time after.
Four occupants were removed by ladder from the balcony at the rear of the structure by firefighters and a neighbor who arrived quickly on scene. Crews were able to contain the fire to the house of origin in a short period of time, although some siding on a neighbouring house was melted.
An estates resident living nearby told e-KNOW she heard a loud bang shortly after the fire began, likely an explosion from one of the two vehicles in the driveway that are completely destroyed.
The incident is currently under control, with a mop-up crew arriving at about 10 a.m.
The fire is being viewed as suspicious in nature and the investigation has been turned over to the RCMP.
A second incident that occurred in the area is also being investigated at this time.
