Firefighters with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) this morning responded to a structure fire in Northwood Estates, off 30th Avenue North (above the Kinsmen Quad Ball Park).

CFES responded to the call at 6:30 a.m. with one engine and three firefighters, with 16 additional firefighters and equipment responding a short time after.

NW fire 1Four occupants were removed by ladder from the balcony at the rear of the structure by firefighters and a neighbor who arrived quickly on scene. Crews were able to contain the fire to the house of origin in a short period of time, although some siding on a neighbouring house was melted.

An estates resident living nearby told e-KNOW she heard a loud bang shortly after the fire began, likely an explosion from one of the two vehicles in the driveway that are completely destroyed.

NW Fire 2The incident is currently under control, with a mop-up crew arriving at about 10 a.m.

The fire is being viewed as suspicious in nature and the investigation has been turned over to the RCMP.

A second incident that occurred in the area is also being investigated at this time.
