SD5 seeks alternate site for students as RMES closed after fire

Parents and guardians of students attending Rocky Mountain Elementary School in Elkford have been informed that an alternative location is being sought to allow for studies to continue following a fire at the school yesterday morning (June 2).

School District No. 5 Superintendent of Schools Lynn Hauptman stated that the fire in several of the school’s heating units, brought under control by Elkford Fire Rescue, resulted in “significant smoke damage throughout the school.”

Addressing parents and guardians in a letter, Hauptman outlined, “The restoration expert is still assessing the damage and the fire department has advised that the building is unsafe for occupancy at this time, therefore, the school will be closed to students/staff until further notice.”

SD5 wants to continue providing education to the children “for the remainder of this school year and the district is busy arranging for an alternate location(s), which we expect to have in place by Monday, June 9,” Hauptman noted, adding notification will be made to parents/guardians later this week and information will be posted on the school website at www.sd5.bc.ca.
