Woman approached by fake police officer (from 2013)
Cranbrook RCMP is investigating an incident Monday evening where a lone woman was approached by a man impersonating a police officer.
On November 4 at 5 p.m., a woman stopped at the roadside rest area 10 km east of Cranbrook to use the washroom. A male approached her identifying himself as “Cst. Johnson” and said he was performing a rest area road check and asked her to walk to the rear of her car. The women believed something was amiss and got back into her car and drove away.
Cranbrook RCMP wants to advise the public that there were no plainclothes officers out that night conducting road checks in that area. If there had been, they would have been readily identifiable by the production of their badge and identification card.
The suspect in this incident was not dressed in a police uniform and did not produce identification. He is believed to be a Caucasian male in his mid 40s, 6’2”, wearing a dark hoodie and baseball cap and driving what is believed to be a 2008 vintage Dodge Charger style of vehicle. The vehicle colour is unknown at this time.
The RCMP are seeking the assistance of anyone who may have observed this incident or has any information about it.
Cranbrook RCMP would like to remind people that if they are approached by someone identifying themselves as a police officer they should ask to see their badge, and identification card, which has a picture of the officer on it. This is especially important when the person is not in uniform. A call to your local detachment can easily remedy any identification issues.
If anyone has any additional information about this or any other crime they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or East Kootenay Crimestoppers (1-800-222-TIPS)
