Black bears making appearances

WildSafeBC Columbia Valley is alerting Invermere and area residents about recent reports of black bears in town, although they have not been officially reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service.

“The reports have come from places we typically receive calls about such as 13th Avenue and CastleRock, and it is likely the same bears or family units from previous years. Please be aware of your surroundings when walking or biking and make sure kids are aware when walking to and from school,” WildSafeBC Columbia Valley notes on its Facebook page.

“As always, please ensure your garbage is inside your house or garage and not accessible to wildlife. Birdfeeders should come down at this time of year, barbecues cleaned, composts managed and pet food stored inside.

We cannot stress enough the importance of reporting bear sightings to the Conservation Officer Service (RAPP Line: 1-877-952-7277), in order to prevent a bear from getting comfortable in your neighborhood. Once it’s reported we can work on removing the attractant and the bear has a better chance of survival.”
