The body of a 24-year-old Calgary man who was caught in an avalanche Jan. 12 and swept into the lake near Mount Brewer has been located and recovered.

Columbia Valley RCMP and Search and Rescue were called to Mount Brewer near Invermere on Saturday after an avalanche occurred. Two men, both from Calgary were initially unaccounted for and believed to have been caught in the avalanche. They were with a group of nine snowmobilers.

A 51-year old man was later located and despite life saving efforts was pronounced deceased.

The 24-year-old man was located by Columbia Valley Search and Rescue early on Monday but he could not be recovered until later the same day when RCMP Underwater Recovery Divers were able to enter the water and free the man.

RCMP would like to thank our community partners who assisted in search and rescue efforts, including Coldstream Helicopters, RK HeliSki, Panorama Resort, Toby Creek Adventures and Columbia Valley, Nelson and Grand Forks Search and Rescue Teams.
