Village of Canal Flats

Welcome to fall everyone! Although we are still experiencing gorgeous weather, one can certainly feel the chill of fall in the air.

The highlight of this month has definitely been, hands down, the grand opening of the Columbia Discovery Centre. It was a gorgeous day and the turnout was awesome.

CFlatsGOdancersWe were treated by wonderful dancing and drumming by the Ktunaxa Nation as well as many kind words from our special guests, such as MP David Wilks, MLA Norm Macdonald, Director of Traditional Knowledge and Language Sector of the Ktunaxa Nation Melanie Sam and many more.

After the ribbon cutting we enjoyed a lively rendition of the Ktunaxa Creation Story told by Councillor Joe Pierre Jr. from the Aq’am Community.

People also enjoyed strolling through the Traditional Gardens, which included meat drying and pit cooking demonstrations by members of the Ktunaxa Nation.

There are way too many people to thank who made this day so special, but I would like to single out just a few; Mel Sam for being the emcee and all the help organizing the event.  Sylvie Hoobanoff for being the best event coordinator I have ever met.  Bill Doroschuk and his crew for all the set up.  Mac Sam for going above and beyond by staying late on Friday digging the pit and setting up the video feed.  I hope everyone had a great time.  I sure did J

Councillor Dean Midyette and I attended the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ (UBCM) convention in Vancouver, September 16-20.  As always, this was one of the highlights of the year for me as a member of our local government.  The lessons learned through the clinics, forums and workshops as well as the networking are invaluable for the community.

Council received written reports from both of us at the regular council meeting on Monday, September 23.  If you would like a copy, please contact the Village Office or check the website.

We have set a date for the first Committee of the Whole meeting for our budget deliberations on October 5, at 9 a.m. in the Columbia Discovery Centre.

During this first of many sessions, staff will present us with reports from each department regarding their respective budgetary needs and/or wants. We will follow this up with a strategic planning session in November (exact date to be announced). We will then have several more discussions on how we can meet the village’s needs without unnecessary burden on the taxpayer. The Five Year Financial Plan has to be adopted by May 15, 2014.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions/concerns.
