Columbia Valley RCMP Report

By Sgt. Darren Kakuno

This past week, September 3 through September 9, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 62 calls for service, a noticeable decrease from previous weeks. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

Boats intentionally sunk

On September 3, police were advised of two partially submerged boats at the boat launch near the Bay Shore Condos in Invermere. The boats were about 15 feet off-shore and appeared to be intentionally sunk as the drain plugs were pulled from both boats. The boats were successfully towed back to shore. Police continue to investigate.

Report of swerving truck results in 90-day prohibition

On September 6, at 4 p.m., police received a report of a blue Ford F350 swerving all over the road on Highway 95 near Spillimacheen. An officer located the truck parked on West Main Street in Radium Hot Springs and as he approached the truck he observed a male slumped over in the driver’s seat with the engine still running.

The officer knocked on the window several times before the driver eventually woke up. The officer noted the driver had an odour of liquor on his breath and he had bloodshot eyes. When asked for his driver’s license the male produced a credit card. When questioned about drinking, the driver admitted to having a few beers prior to being stopped. This led the officer to suspect he was impaired by alcohol. The officer read a breath demand to the driver who ultimately refused to provide a sample.

The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impound. He was also served a violation ticket for possession of open liquor in a motor vehicle.

Man down turns out to be mannequin

On September 9, at 1:30 p.m., police received a report of a man down in a field west of Westrock Haul road near Invermere. Police and BC Ambulance paramedics immediately responded only to discover the subject of the complaint was a mannequin. The mannequin was removed to prevent any further complaints.
