Columbia Valley RCMP Report

By Sgt. Darren Kakuno

This past week, October 29 through November 4, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 60 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

Minor injuries in collision with telephone pole

On October 29 at 10:30 a.m., RCMP, Fire/Rescue and ambulance paramedics responded to a single vehicle collision in the 2400 block of Kootenay Rd No 3 in Windermere after a northbound truck went off the right side of the road and collided with a telephone pole. The driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The telephone pole had to be replaced as a result of the damage from the collision.

Assault in Radium

Later the same afternoon officers received a report of an assault at a property in the 4800 block of Stanley Street in Radium Hot Springs. A disagreement between two friends resulted in a physical fight. An adult male was arrested for assault and later released with conditions not to contact the other male.

Halloween Wilmer tire fire

On October 31 at 1 a.m., Invermere Fire Department reported someone had lit some tires on fire in the middle of a roadway in Wilmer. The fire department had extinguished the fire and no further damage was reported.

Trafficking charge follows speeding incident

On November 3, 8 p.m. an off duty RCMP officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Athalmer Road in Invermere. Minutes later the officer observed the vehicle parked and running at a local liquor store. The officer called for backup and approached the vehicle to speak to the driver about his driving. While speaking with the driver he noticed a baggie with a white substance inside the car. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. The driver admitted to using cocaine prior to driving and was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition. As a result of further
investigation the driver is facing a charge of trafficking a controlled substance.

Four impaired charges in five hours

On the same evening, officers with East Kootenay Traffic Services conducted a five-hour road check on Fairmont Resort Road and removed four impaired drivers from our roadways. Three 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions, one 24-hour driving prohibition and five violation tickets were issued.
