Effective today, Thursday July 30, at 12 p.m. MT, a park-wide fire ban will be implemented in Kootenay National Park.

This expands on the fire ban already in effect at Redstreak Campground and will apply throughout the rest of the park.

This fire ban includes all open fires and prohibits the use of the following items:

Campfires (wood or briquette);

Barbecues (wood, charcoal or briquette);

Outdoor wood burning stoves (including cooking shelters);

Turkey fryers;

Tiki torches;

Candles.

The following Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certified devices are permitted under the fire ban if used under direct supervision:

• Portable propane fire pits (prohibited at overflow campgrounds);

• Gas or propane stoves and barbecues designed for cooking or heating;

• Propane or gas fuelled lanterns (enclosed flame);

• Patio heaters (propane, catalytic or infrared/radiant);

• Indoor wood burning stoves within fully enclosed permanent buildings (not wall tents or camper vans).

The fire ban will be removed as soon as weather and forest conditions permit.
