Hollywood is returning to Invermere and the Purcell Mountains in the New Year.

According to Hollywood North.Buzz, British stars Kate Winslet and Idris Elba will be in the Columbia Valley shooting scenes for the feature film ‘The Mountain Between Us’ from January 4 to the end of the month.

Filming is expected to take place around Invermere and Panorama Mountain Resort.

Directed by Hany Abu-Assad and adapted by Christ Weitz, The Mountain Between Us is a winter survival romance, adapted from the Charles Martin book.

Hollywood North.Buzz describes the story: “Writer Ashley Knox (Kate Winslet) and surgeon Dr. Ben Payne (Idris Elba) are stranded in Salt Lake City in winter weather when their flight is cancelled because the plane can’t be de-iced. She needs to get back home for her wedding and he’s headed east from a medical conference to perform scheduled surgeries so they charter a plane to Denver and end up crashing on a mountain. How will they survive in freezing temperatures and snow? Both are injured in the crash, but Ben is a mountain climber as well as a doctor and struggles to get her down the mountain. Maybe Ashley’s marrying the wrong guy?”

The busy 44-year-old Idris Elba has starred in such films as: Prometheus; Pacific Rim; Thor: The Dark World; Beasts of No Nation; The Jungle Book; Finding Dory; Star Trek Beyond and he will be starring as The Gunslinger in the long-awaited film production of Steven King’s The Dark Tower.

A Mountain Between Us is expected to wrap in British Columbia on February 24 (date subject to change), Hollywood North.Buzz noted.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has come to town.

In 1993, Invermere, Panorama and the Purcells were turned into the South American Andres for the feature film of survival and cannibalism – Alive.

A Canadian feature film, Suck It Up, was also shot in the valley last spring
