Giving students taking part in BIG Christmas Sale

Mrs. Wilisky’s JA Laird Elementary School Grade 5/6 class has unleashed its social entrepreneurial spirit while participating in a Junior Achievement program called Business Of Our Own.

In this program, the class builds on basic business concepts like the role of philanthropy, management, production, marketing and learn how to run a successful retail business of their own. The classroom’s business, Craft Shack, has produced unique crafts to sell at this year’s BIG Christmas Craft Sale in Invermere to raise money to donate to the Global Animal Lovers (GALS).

Junior Achievement programs are run by local community leaders to help bring the real world into the classroom.

Rhiannon Tutty from Stuart Tutty Financial Services and SunLife Financial is leading the way for the next generation as a champion volunteer. With her background in finance, entrepreneurship and passion for financial literacy, Rhiannon has delivered six Junior Achievement programs this fall in local classrooms. We thank Rhiannon for her time and commitment to her community’s youth.

Obviously paying attention, the students submitted an event advance and promotional article to e-KNOW.

“Come to the 25th annual BIG Christmas Craft Sale to help support Mrs. Wilisky’s Grade 5/6 class. We are trying to raise money to donate to the Global Animal Lovers (GALS) and to extend our learning outside of the class room. We are starting a class business. We are called “Craft Shack.” You can find us on Facebook. We’re selling cute unique homemade crafts.

“We would like to give a shout out to Rhiannon Tutty, from Sunlife Financial, for helping make this happen and Carolyn Barzilay, who runs the craft sale, to let us sell our products at the craft sale.

“We’re selling our homemade crafts on Friday, December 1, from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday December 2, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the new community hall, across from Sobeys.

Anyway, we hope you buy from us on the first weekend of December at the new community hall.”

The BIG Christmas Craft Sale runs tomorrow evening and Saturday at the new community hall (7th Ave, Invermere).

JA British Columbia (JABC) is a member of JA Canada and part of JA Worldwide (JA), the world’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business. Since 1955, British Columbia schools have relied on JA to inspire and prepare youth to succeed in an ever-changing global economy. In 2016, over 38,000 BC students benefited from JABC programs delivered free of charge by volunteers from local business communities, who bring their real-life experience into the classroom. JABC programs focus on work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, giving students the confidence and skills they need to become the next generation of business and community leaders.
