A look at the 26th Bonspiel on the Lake
Every winter for many, many years Invermere has hosted a well-attended curling bonspiel.
While that streak is impressive, what makes the event so special is the location. Yes, we all know that the Columbia Valley is a great place for curling, but the Taynton Bay-based event is extremely unique.
Nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the East and the Purcells to the west, at the north end of Lake Windermere, is a curling rink like almost no other. Outdoors and exposed to the elements from dawn to dusk, 64 teams of curlers (hailing from homes locally and even internationally) take to the frozen lake for a weekend of getting their rocks off. This year’s event marked the 26th annual.
