Segway tours on Whiteway coming

By Stephanie Stevens

Ski, stroll, skate or soon… Segway.

A new way to tour the Lake Windermere Whiteway this winter is in the works, one that will allow both residents and visitors alike to enjoy the record holding, longest skating trail in the world.

Patrick Tolchard, co-owner of Valley Zipline Adventures LTD addressed District of Invermere (DOI) council Nov. 27 to present their new venture and request support.

Tolchard and his business partner Krista Berg purchased a fleet of 11 all-terrain Segways to add to their adventure business in the summer season, and it only made sense to add winter adventure to the mix.

The pair has already received approval from the Toby Creek Nordic Club, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Regional District of East Kootenay and Front Counter BC.

The tours would begin with a half hour training session, and tours would run from one to three hours, with Tolchard guiding each one to ensure respectful use and safety to everyone using the Whiteway.

Policies and procedures for any unforeseen issues are also in place.

Coun. Kayja Becker commented that Tolchard had “clearly done his research” and asked if there were minimum conditions for a Segway.

Tolchard responded that if needed, they could look into cables for the tires, however the units are winter rated, so while they have options if need be, it is unlikely they would need to use them.

Mayor Al Miller thank Tolchard “for being creative and bringing a new adventure to the valley.”

While DOI chief administrative officer Chris Prosser said the proposal does not quires council approval per se, Coun. Gerry Taft moved council approve the proposal in principle, which received a unanimous in favour vote.
