Kootenay National Park update for long weekend

With sun in the forecast we are excited to welcome visitors to Kootenay National Park this May long weekend. Visitors are reminded to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time when visiting the national parks this summer.

There is still a lot of snow on many hiking trails so be sure to check the trail report or stop by a Parks Canada Visitor Centre for current trail information before you head out. www.parkscanada.gc.ca/kootenaytrails

A reminder that National Park Entry Pass is required for all visitors entering and using facilities within the national parks.

Here are some essential details about the upcoming weekend:

Camping
•   Parks Canada is pleased to offer safe and enjoyable camping for visitors. We remind all visitors and campers that alcohol is prohibited in all national park front country campgrounds during long weekends from May to September.
•   Redstreak Campground in Kootenay National Park is fully booked for the May long weekend. Cancellations can be made up until 24 hours in advance.

Be bear aware
•   At this time of year, bears are waking up and searching for food after losing calories while they were sleeping, so the animals are focused on finding food. When out enjoying the park, people need to follow safe travel practices while in bear country.
•   Remember to travel in groups and make noise, keep dogs on leash and under control at all times, carry bear spray and know how to use it. It is a good idea to make sure your bear spray has not expired and that it didn’t freeze over the winter.
•   While in the national parks, please respect all wildlife and be a responsible park user. Never feed wildlife, do not litter or leave food unattended, give wildlife space, and please obey the posted speed limits. A reminder that recreational use of drones disturbs wildlife and is prohibited.

NOTE: As of today, May 18, there is a 13 km no stopping zone on Highway 93 between McKay Creek campground and the Kootenay Valley overlook for wildlife and public safety.
