Living tiny in the valley

By now, most people in North America have heard of the ‘tiny house’ movement, and with the national average home size in Canada weighing in at a whopping 2,000-square-feet, the attention and curiosity of many has turned toward a variety of smaller home concepts.

Wildsight’s monthly discussion evening, Wild Ideas, will explore the idea of living tiny in the Columbia Valley on Thursday, July 21, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Circle Café.

Kim Baker and Jackie Lysak will open a discussion about the myriad of reasons for the shift to tiny homes. Cost is one major factor, however, there are many among us who are interested in the lifestyle perks that come with owning or occupying a smaller home; less maintenance and cleaning, greater flexibility in terms of where you can live in your smaller house, and more time and money for pursuits such as travel, adventure and hobbies.

When a person embraces the idea of a smaller home, they are in essence welcoming a life with fewer encumbrances, and a smaller footprint in general.

Many people are truly getting lost inside huge homes filled with every conceivable product on the market and in most cases they don’t even know why. In an increasingly complicated and stuff filled world, downsizing and de-cluttering have become very desirable for those seeking greater peace and a break from the constant distractions that come with the traditional home and lifestyle.

To be clear, there is no rule book that dictates what size home you should live in or how many belongings you should possess, for some it might be complete minimalism in a 300-square-foot house on wheels, for others it might be a little piece of land with a 750-square-foot house on it.

‘Wild Ideas: Tiny Homes’ will initiate a conversation about what it means to live smaller and how this can be achieved in a society that holds on to certain ideals about how a person should behave as a home owner and a consumer. Join us to find out more – everyone is welcome!
