Man drowns saving children from Lake Windermere

Columbia Valley RCMP this afternoon confirmed that a 20-year-old man drowned last Friday, May 31, after rescuing two children from Lake Windermere.

Through investigation it was learned that the man had swum out into the lake to rescue two young children whose inflatable had been blown into the lake. The male was able to assist and push the young girls back to shore, but unfortunately could not make it back himself, reported Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment Sgt. Darren Kakuno June 3.

“Bystanders from the beach reached the male in the water and pulled him to shore and began performing first aid until the BC Ambulance and fire departments arrived. The young man was pronounced deceased at the local hospital,” he said.

No other details were provided.

The BC Coroners Service was contacted and is in the early stages of its fact-finding investigation; the Coroners Service investigates all sudden, unexpected and/or unnatural deaths in the province to determine who died, how, where, when and by what means.
