Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park partly reopened

As a result of cooler temperatures and moderate fire danger ratings, BC Parks – in consultation with the BC Wildfire Service – has reopened southern sections of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park for public use, effective immediately.

However, the northern section that remains closed includes: the Simpson River drainage north of Og Lake Campground; the entire Surprise Creek drainage (north of Ferro Pass); and the entire Indian Creek drainage.

The Sunshine Meadows area and the southern portion of the park are now open.

The park has been under an evacuation order because of the Verdant Creek fire that spread in from Kootenay National Park. The fire is still about 4,100 hectares in size. There are 75 people and five helicopters working on this fire.

Wildfires are dynamic, and circumstances may change quickly. BC Parks and the BC Wildfire Service will continue to monitor and assess the wildfire situation in the region to help protect public safety. Should the need arise, additional provincial park closures may be enacted this summer, the BC Wildfire Service notes.

For more information about the areas of the park that remain closed, check the BC Parks website.

BC Parks and the BC Wildfire Service ask members of the public to remain vigilant, help prevent human-caused wildfires and report any wildfires that they see. To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call *5555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555 toll-free.
