No-stopping order due to bear jams

Parks Canada had to once again issue a ‘no-stopping restriction’ along Highway 93 near the Olive Lake area in Kootenay National Park.

The Olive Lake day use area picnic site and interpretive trail, east of Radium Hot Springs, was closed earlier this spring due to plentiful bear activity and following a chaotic weekend, with dangerous ‘bear jams’ occurring, the no-stopping restriction was issued by the park superintendent.

The section of highway closed stretches about 11 km from McKay Compound to Cobb Lake (near the Kootenay Valley corner/hill).

In concert is a closure of nearby Tumbling Creek Trail.

Parks Canada is asking the public to move carefully along that stretch of highway and to avoid feeding bears or any wildlife so as not to create greater chances of human/wildlife conflicts.
