Rockies remember Leo Kienitz and Louis McSheffrey

A packed Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena fell silent Feb. 16 as the entire Columbia Valley Rockies line up and three Minor ‘7th Rockies’ joined to pay their respects to two long-time Rockies volunteers who both sadly passed away earlier this week.

The players, fans and the visiting Kimberley Dynamiters observed a period of silence for both Leo Kienitz and Louis McSheffrey.

Leo Kienitz, until very recently was still working most days at the Rockies’ wood lot. He, alongside the late Ray Brydon and Jerry Hope, operated the wood lot for many years. Their efforts assured funding for the team through some of its leanest years. More recently their efforts contributed to the purchase and operation of the new team bus.

Leo was a very intelligent, principled, and caring man, who was happy to stand up for his views; and to pour a lot of effort into his community. He cared greatly for many causes that drew his passion, and demonstrated this through years of voluntary service with the Rockies, the Lions Club, and more.

Our thoughts, and prayers are with his wife, Dianne, their family; his friends; and his coffee shop and wood lot partners.

Louis McSheffrey was a long-time fixture on the Rockies board; and could be found in the goal judge’s box during most games. He continued with these roles (always with a smile or laugh), and with helping out at Rockies events, until his health no longer permitted him to do so in more recent times. Our thoughts and prayers are also with his family and friends at this time.

The contribution of people like Leo and Louis, both to their community, and the Columbia Valley Rockies, is what makes it possible for junior hockey to thrive in the valley; and is a significant part of what makes our community so vibrant and welcoming.

For this we thank them, and will remember them…

Editor’s note: Apologies to the McSheffrey family on the lack of a photo of Louis. We did not have an available file image.
