2026 Capital Works Program starting to gear up

As the weather continues to improve, planning efforts are moving along well for the various projects which make up the City’s 2026 capital works program.

Baker Street & 10th Avenue South Intersection (pictured above)

A recent traffic study confirmed this intersection will remain a permanent four-way stop. It has operated as a four-way stop since August 2025, when a lightning-related power surge caused the traffic signals to fail. As part of the new design, each approach will have one lane, and the dedicated left- and right-turn lanes will be removed.

Line Painting

Extending the bike lanes on 14th Avenue this spring, building on changes made in recent years. The lanes will run from Baker Street to just south of 2nd Street South, creating a more complete connection between downtown and the Rotary Way trail that continues south on 15th Avenue.

To help support the new layout, the intersection at 14th Avenue and 2nd Street South will see a few updates, including removing the right-turn-only lane and adding extended no-parking areas. These changes will help improve alignment and sightlines, meet current safety standards, and better manage growing traffic volumes.

With more people walking, cycling, and using e-scooters and e-bikes, these connected routes are becoming increasingly important for the safety of pedestrians, active transportation users, and motorists alike. More details and timing of this specific project will be shared soon. Planning is also underway for future links from downtown to the College of the Rockies and the existing active transportation lanes on College Way.

The city will also be completing a line painting program to freshen up road markings including repainting lane lines, crosswalks, yellow curbs, and stop bars throughout the community. Aardvark is the project contractor, with work scheduled to start toward the end of May 2026.

Paving Program

Along Victoria Avenue, changes are planned to be made to 12th Street North, 8th Street North, and 4th Street North, where new concrete medians will guide traffic to right-in, right-out movements only.

Access to the A&W from Victoria Avenue will also change, with no more left turns in or out due to new concrete barriers. These intersections will become right-hand turn in and turn out only. These updates are being made to improve safety and help keep traffic moving more smoothly.

Other streets which are to be paved include: 7th Street North (Kootenay Street to Highway 3) and Industrial Road 2 (Georgian Heights to Industrial Road G). Echo Field Road (Rails to Trails to Mennie Road) may be repaved if the pricing from the successful contractor fits within our budget.

A section of Rotary Trail which was removed as part of the St. Mary’s Sewer Trunk project last summer is to be repaved along with the main parking lot of the Canadian Rockies International Airport.
