As we continue to move through the summer, activity on our 2026 capital works program in Cranbrook is progressing well, with several important projects already completed.

Phillips Reservoir UV Disinfection Facility Project

The Phillips Reservoir UV Disinfection Facility (pictured above) will modernize how the city treats drinking water by adding ultraviolet (UV) disinfection to the treatment process, alongside a new sodium hypochlorite system.

Together, these upgrades create a dual-barrier treatment system that improves water quality, enhances safety for both the public and operators, and ensures the city continues to meet provincial drinking water standards.

Underground work continues with trenching and underground pipe installations underway. The next phase will include concrete and foundation works for the structure.

In March 2024, the City of Cranbrook was awarded $9.5 million in funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Environmental Quality Stream with $5.20 million from the Government of Canada and $4.33 million from both the Government of Canada and the Province of BC. The city is contributing a total of $3.46 million to the $12.99-million project.

The City of Cranbrook gratefully acknowledges the financial commitment of both the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia toward this important project, which is expected to be completed by the fall of 2027.

Wastewater Treatment Lagoons & Baffle Curtains

This is phase four of the lagoons upgrades which looks to replace the existing effluent screen with a new dual channel screener. The recent Request for Proposal closed with one bidder; however, the proposed project is over budget. Staff is working on solutions to perhaps break out the work into smaller pieces.

Meantime, baffle curtains will be installed in lagoon cells two and three by Nexom, with work to be completed by the fall of 2026. Sewage baffle curtains are structures used in wastewater treatment lagoons to help enhance treatment efficiency. They work by directing the flow of wastewater through a serpentine path, increasing hydraulic retention time (HRT) and prevents short-circuiting allowing for better mixing and nutrient removal.

Balment Sanitary Sewer Trunkmain Replacement

This project (right), which was completed earlier this spring by Gally Equipment, replaced and upsized the undersized sanitary sewer trunk main, which is located between 1st Street South and Victoria Avenue and runs the back side of Balment Park, the soccer dome and the Cranbrook Curling Club building.

Claydon Villa Watermain

This project is designed to replace the water distribution main, replacing an iron pipe from 1970 with a 250mm PVC pipe. Gally Equipment is the successful project contractor, with the contract in process of being finalized.

Work is expected to be completed later this summer or into the fall.

Pressure Reducing Station (PRV) 4

In early June 2026, work was undertaken on PRV 4 by Stephen Engineering to replace internal piping and upgrades for increased fire flow in the area. This project (right) is now complete.

Paving Program

A number of paving projects are lined up for this summer. The main parking lot of the Canadian Rockies International Airport is set to be milled and repaved between August 6 and August 28, 2026. Alternate overflow parking will be available to airport visitors while this paving work is completed.

7th Street North from Highway 3 to Kootenay Street North; Industrial Road 2 from Georgian Heights trailer park to Industrial Road G, and Echo Field Road from Highway 95A to Mennie Road will also be milled and repaved, with Terus Construction contracted to complete the paving work.
