Autumnal Full Moons

By Dan Hicks

Our ashen Harvest Moon breaks free of horizonal cloud and ascends into a clear cool September night sky above Cranbrook; a welcome contrast to August’s unseen full moon, shrouded by smoke and cloud.

September 24, Monday 8:47 p.m. MDT. A contemplation of the moon’s cratered surface, battered by bolides over the eons, enhances our appreciation of our Earth’s sheltering atmosphere (over 99% protective).

The October full moon was the Hunter’s Moon on Wednesday, October 24, at its fullest at 10:45 a.m. MDT.

Lead image: As Cranbrook goes to work, the Harvest Moon sets unnoticed as it emerges momentarily in the dawn chill through a cloudy western horizon on September 25, Tuesday 7:22 a.m. MDT. The dawn temperature fell to freezing, giving the city its first autumnal frosting. Photos by Dan Hicks
