Book a home safety visit

November is Falls Prevention Month. Safe Communities Cranbrook is taking the opportunity to remind everyone of a few simple steps that can be taken to lessen the risks.

The four major components of falls prevention are: Exercise; Annual vision checks; Medication review; Home safety.

Throughout the month of November, we will share information and a few tips on how to reduce the risk in each of these four areas.

Attention seniors and caregivers!

Falls are often caused by home hazards that are easy to overlook, but easy to fix. And because falls are the most common cause of injury among BC seniors, Safe Communities Cranbrook has partnered with Cranbrook Better at Home and the College of the Rockies Bachelor of Science Nursing program to bring the message home.

First year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students, supported by third year BSN practicum students, are excited to be providing free home safety visits! These visits will include a quick screening of your home to help determine whether you may be at risk of falling: some easy fall prevention strategies will be offered.

This project will help local residents to recognize potential hazards BEFORE an accident occurs, and will help the nursing students to better understand community needs as well as leadership and mentoring skills. A three way win!

The home visits will be provided on November 16 and November 23 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you are interested in signing up for a visit, contact Laurie Harris at Better at Home: email [email protected], private message on www.facebook.com/CranbrookBetteratHome, or call 250-426-2943.
