City issues alert about bogus collections texts

The City of Cranbrook this afternoon report is has heard from some residents saying that they have received a text message claiming to be from the City of Cranbrook about property taxes still owing with a link embedded in the text.

“We do not text our residents about taxes, utilities, parking tickets or any other types of payments,” said city corporate communications officer Chris Zettel.

“If there are any payment issues, we will only contact you by phone or by a letter in the mail – not by text.”

Zettel advises if you have received a text like this, please delete it.

If you received it and did click on the link, please monitor your device, email, and banking closely and if anything suspicious happens, please contact the Cranbrook RCMP directly at 250-489-3471.
