City urges vigilance around water bodies

With the recent warm weather and with rain in the forecast for most of the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend, the City of Cranbrook is reminding residents to be safe around local creeks and waterways and to report any flooding or creek bank erosion events.

Please contact the city at 311 or after-hours at 250-489-4264 to report any of the following:

Obstructions in creeks;

Flooded ditches;

Blocked culverts;

Flooded roadways.

City staff are monitoring the water levels in Joseph Creek and have started to see water levels rising.

Sandbags and crews are ready to be deployed if needed.

The city currently has no major concerns about any low-lying flooding due to lower than normal snowpack, however, if forecast rainfall amounts were to increase significantly it could increase the risk and likelihood of a flood event.

The city is asking residents to stay a safe distance away from creeks and water bodies.

The city reports it will continue to closely monitor creek levels and will provide updates and additional information throughout the weekend and into next week, should conditions change.

For more information about flooding and flood preparedness, visit the City of Cranbrook’s website.
