East Kootenay Air & Army Cadets Home-towner

Army Cadet Dakota Smythe was one of the cadets from 1813 Lord Strathcona Cadet Corp who traveled to France to attend the 100th Anniversary Services at Vimy Ridge.

Dakota feels that the greatest part of the cadet program is the exchanges and traveling opportunities. She really looked forward to the Vimy trip. In her words, “the importance of Vimy Ridge is all the men who sacrificed everything, even their life need to be remembered and thanked. The opportunities we have been given – the chance to go to school, get a job, get married, have a child and so much more. This is because they fought for us, all they wanted was peace and freedom. The least we can do is give them respect and honour. This is our reminder of the pain and suffering they went through, for all of that I am so grateful.”

Through cadets, Warrant Officer Smythe has learned about knots, leadership and many outdoor skills. She has attended several summer training courses, including being a Staff Cadets at the Vernon Summer Training Centre.

Her hobbies include working, on-line window shopping, driving and school. Dakota is in her last year at Mount Baker Secondary School and is considering a military career after graduation.

The aim of the National Cadet program is to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Canadian youth aged 12 to 18 are encouraged to learn more about the cadet programs in their community. Though the program is military based, there is no obligation to for a cadet to join the forces.
