History Centre seeks help in break-in battle
The Cranbrook History Centre has seen a dramatic increase in break-ins targeting our historic rail collection. Between 2022 and 2025, we experienced four break-ins. In 2026 alone, we have already had 11.
These incidents have resulted in extensive and costly damage to several railcars.
The individuals responsible are not simply trespassing. They have removed panels, cut through large electrical cables, removed rivets, and caused significant damage to historic artifacts that cannot easily be replaced.
We want to be clear that these incidents do not appear to be connected to the unhoused community. The damage suggests a level of knowledge and intent beyond simple trespassing or vandalism and appears to be the work of individuals specifically targeting rail equipment.
In addition to the financial cost, these repeated incidents have affected staff and volunteers who work hard to preserve and share these historic artifacts with the community.
We are asking for the community’s help. If you see suspicious activity around the trains, especially after hours, please let us know. If you witness individuals entering fenced areas overnight or actively tampering with equipment, please contact the Cranbrook RCMP immediately.
We would also like to thank Eagle Security. While patrolling a nearby business recently, their staff noticed individuals with flashlights entering the fenced rail yard. They stopped to investigate, and their quick actions caused the intruders to flee before further damage could be done.
Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported the Cranbrook History Centre through memberships, donations, and words of encouragement. Your support helps us repair damage, improve security, and preserve these important pieces of Canadian railway history.
To support our preservation efforts, become a member or make a donation.
Together, we can help protect Cranbrook’s railway heritage for future generations.
