ICE’s Fleury ranked in top 80

TSN’s Bob Mackenzie yesterday released his mid-season draft rankings (top 80) for the 2017 National Hockey League draft and Kootenay ICE defender Cale Fleury has made the cut – just.

Cale Fleury

The 23rd top ranked defenseman by McKenzie, he is rated in the number 80 slot, which would be a mid-third round selection.

Fleury, a 6’1”, 212 lb. blueliner from Calgary has eight goals, 22 assists and 30 points in 49 games with the struggling ICE this season. He also just participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec City on Jan. 30, suiting up for Team Cherry, which defeated Team Orr 7-5.

NHL Central Scouting says of Fleury: “Smooth skating defenseman with quickness and agility – heads up player who is effective seeing the ice to advance the puck and generate chances from the back end – good skill set handling and moving the puck at offensive blue line and possesses a good shot from the point. Third year player in WHL with good size/strength asset; continues to grow, already having added two inches since entering league as 16-year-old. Plays heavy minutes and is capable to play in all situations; compares his game to Ryan Suter. He is the younger brother of Carolina Hurricanes prospect and former Red Deer Rebels defenseman Haydn Fleury.
