BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Cranbrook where a person sustained serious injuries.

On Wednesday, September 16, at approximately 7:51 a.m. local time (MDT), Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an assault and threats involving a weapon at a residence near 4th Street North and 18th Avenue North.

A suspected youth male had reportedly threatened individuals at the residence with a knife before fleeing on foot.

At approximately 8 a.m. MDT, the suspect youth was located on the roof of Mount Baker Secondary School. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was evacuated while responding officers established containment and attempted to communicate with the suspect.

At approximately 10:07 a.m. MDT, the suspect youth jumped from the roof and sustained serious injuries. First responders immediately provided medical assistance before the individual was transported to hospital. No one else was injured in the incident.

The IIO BC was notified and are investigating police actions in this incident. The area was cordoned off to support the investigation.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
