Local author publishes first children’s book
Cranbrook resident Riki Unrau has released her first children’s picture book – ‘The Tiny Things that Timothy Saw.’
The book was inspired by Unrau’s nephew who has always had a knack for spotting things too tiny for most people to notice.
“We were on Horseshoe Lake last year when he pointed out these little water bugs that I had never noticed before. That’s when the idea hit me. A story about a boy who discovers a magical land simply because he takes the time to look a little bit closer at the things others miss.”
Unrau wrote the prose poem in a day but the illustration portion would prove to be the challenge.
“I felt as though it needed to be me who illustrated the book. The only problem was that I didn’t know how to draw or paint,” Unrau said.
On August 8 of last year she set to work learning how to illustrate. Eight months later she was able to hold the finished product of her hard work in her hands.
“It was an amazing feeling of accomplishment. To have an idea and then devote every spare moment I had to manifesting that idea into the world. Now I have unlimited new story ideas and am working on my next book to be released this summer,” she said.
Unrau writes under the pen name ‘Ariadne Appletree.’ The Tiny Things that Timothy Saw is available on Amazon as well as Unrau’s website www.soulbirdstudio.ca
