Local man killed in Highway 3/95 crash

A local man was killed this afternoon in a two-vehicle collision in Cranbrook.

Just past noon (May 5), RCMP responded to the report of a collision on Highway 3/95 in Cranbrook, near 1st Avenue South.

The collision occurred when a Chevrolet Malibu was attempting to make a left turn off the frontage road onto the highway and was struck broadside by a southbound Ford Explorer, East Kootenay Traffic Services RCMP reported.

The 82-year-old male driver from Cranbrook who was driving the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported to East Kootenay Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two occupants in the Ford Explorer did not appear to have sustained any significant injuries, RCMP said.

The highway was reduced to single alternating traffic for about four hours while police and a collision reconstructionist investigated.

The collision is being investigated by East Kootenay Traffic Services and the BC Coroners Service.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision, police stated.
