Local students win at Western Canadian Business Competition

Junior and senior teams from College of the Rockies each earn team and individual awards

College of the Rockies Business students returned from the Western Canadian Business Competition at Okanagan College in Kelowna with four of the top awards.

The college’s senior team, consisting of Bachelor of Business Administration students Bradley Schmidt and Jordan Lydell, alongside post-degree business students Gitanjali, and Navjeet Vasudeva, won Top Team – Senior Division. Schmidt was also awarded Second Individual – Senior Division.

The junior team, made up of Business Management diploma students Matthew Kitt, Tyler Epp, Luis Galdamez, and Kurtis Lutzke, won Second Place – Junior Division, with Kitt winning the Top Individual – Junior Division award.

Teams from across Western Canada took part in the competition and were tasked with running a simulated business that produces cameras and drones. Competitors were required to create a business plan that covered eight years of decision making with the assumption that the company operates in four market regions: Europe-Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and North America.

“This was an outstanding performance by both of our teams,” said Business instructor and team coach Butch Butalid. “Our teams worked hard leading up to the competition and I’m pleased to see that hard work rewarded. We are very proud of their accomplishments.”

“The entire college community, especially the Business Management department, congratulate the team on their wins,” added Business Programs Coordinator, Greg McCallum. “The team members, along with their coach, Butch, represented the College brilliantly.”

The Western Canadian Business Competition is a comprehensive undergraduate business competition where students consolidate their knowledge and skills in teams to develop strategic solutions in a simulated business scenario.
