Ron Popoff seeking re-election to city council

City of Cranbrook Councillor Ron Popoff has announced he will seek re-election in the Oct. 20 municipal election.

Popoff has lived in Cranbrook for 28 years with his wife Joanna, where they raised two wonderful children. He loves the City of Cranbrook and would appreciate the opportunity to serve the community once again.

Four years ago, Popoff pointed out in a media release, he promised he would help to control spending and taxes, fix roads, remove barriers of attracting new business and growing local business, and revitalizing downtown Cranbrook. These were promises he kept, he said, adding he is pleased with the progress made, but recognizes there is still work to be done.

“Along with these priorities, I will focus my efforts on increasing housing availability and supporting job creation. We require adequate jobs that can support our young families in becoming home owners, raising children, and participating in our community,” he said.

Popoff said he enjoys serving as an ambassador of the city, often telling people that “Cranbrook is affordable and accessible to skiing, golf, and many wilderness adventures.”

A lover of the quality of life in Cranbrook, Popoff believes that livability is something we need to sell. His goal is that the community continues to grow and prosper, he noted.

“By capitalizing on Cranbrook’s location as a central hub of services, roads, rail, and air transport, the city has the opportunity to attract knowledge-based companies with high-tech jobs and new manufacturing industries, all while improving the tourism and hospitality sector,” he said.

Local government must remain focused to provide quality services to citizens who are paying taxes, he said.

Popoff is involved in the community as liaison to the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Cranbrook Social Planning Society, BC Poverty Reduction Committee, and as an alternate Regional District of East Kootenay Director. He is also on the executive of the Kootenay & Boundary Local Governments Association.

Popoff is a member of the Rotary Club of Cranbrook, 55+ BC Games committee, and is a Gran Fondo volunteer. He was a long-time member of Kinsmen and coached many youth sports. Prior to serving as a city councillor he had a successful career in public health and was responsible for ensuring healthy communities, showcasing a strong management background and knowledge of how government works.

Coun. Popoff welcomes your comments and suggestions to build our community together. “I want to work for you.”
