Sam Steele Days honours all who serve and protect

SALUTE THE BOOTS is the theme and tagline of this year’s 2016 Sam Steele Days Community festival, Cranbrook’s largest annual event, bringing public attention to the people who keep us safe and secure.

Christy Wheeldon, President of the Sam Steele Society, explained that the focus began forming while watching our Legion’s colour party march proudly in the St. Eugene Golf, Resort & Casino Sam Steele Days Parade year after year.

“Our community, as well as our Canadian lifestyle, thrive because of the dedicated people who provide essential services when adversity is at our door,” she stated.

Clive Brown, President of Legion Branch No. 24 says Legion members are excited to participate.

For services in the past, present or future, 10 organizations have been invited to participate at a higher level leading up to and including promotions and activities during the upcoming city-wide festival. The invitees include Legion Branch No. 24, Canadian Armed Forces, cadets, RCMP, Firefighters, multiple medical and emergency service providers, and CDART (Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team). The Sam Steele Days Parade, growing to 106 entries last year, hopes this theme will also resonate with others entering the parade.

For example; the Tamarack Centre has partnered with the 1813 Army Cadets in providing their deliciously popular Kick-Off Pancake Breakfast, the first registered festival event commencing Thursday June 16 at 8 a.m. in the Tamarack Centre’s parking lot and the Legion has partnered with Bridge Interiors in a Chalk Art Challenge and BBQ on Saturday June 18 following the parade.

The Sam Steele Society thanks the whole community for embracing ‘Salute the Boots’ and encourages everyone to decorate a pair of old boots in any creative way and bring them to Rotary Park on June 18 or 19 where they will be displayed prominently and have photos shared on social media.
