Canada Day around the region

There is no shortage of patriotism on display in the East Kootenay this weekend as Canada celebrates it’s 149th birthday.

From the Columbia Valley to the Elk Valley to Cranbrook and Kimberley, celebrations, festivals and markets are planned.

Here is a quick glimpse of what is happening.

City of Cranbrook

crancandayCranbrook’s celebration is on two fronts July 1, thanks to a partnership between the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society and the City of Cranbrook.

One of the largest attended events will be in Rotary Park from 3 to 9:30 p.m. with a full roster of activities, entertainment, food and fun for all ages. Live bands will grace the Rotary band shell, with crafts and activities hosted by the city’s PLAY program staff, bouncy castles, great food vendors, local dignitaries and the community citizenship awards will be given out.

Canada-Day-FernieCity of Fernie

Join in on July 1 for a great Canada Day party at the Fernie Aquatic Centre grounds! Watch the kids show-off their decorated bikes in the annual Bike and Pet Parade, enjoy a free swim, food, crafts and more! Check out the event and entertainment lineup.

City of Kimberley

first SaturdayjulyCanada Day celebrations will be held at the Platzl, starting at noon. Entertainment and activities will be provided throughout the afternoon. Also, don’t forget the Duck Race held annually on July 1 with a barbecue at 11:30 a.m. at the Civic Centre. Duck Race begins at 1 p.m.

In addition, Kimberley’s First Saturdays begins for the summer on Saturday, July 2. First Saturdays is a celebration of arts, culture and heritage, held in Kimberley’s Platzl (downtown pedestrian area).

Wildcat DaysDistrict of Elkford

Celebrate Canada’s birthday in Elkford, as well as Wildcat Days! Join in for a free family barbecue, entertainment and a free public swim.

District of Invermere

mmcandayrcmpInvermere gets a jump on the fun by holding a midnight fireworks display over Lake Windermere, courtesy once again of the Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley.

Things keep rolling Saturday with the annual Canada Day Parade at 11 a.m. The parade rolls down main street to Kinsmen Beach, with hundreds of parade onlookers in tow. There they are greeted by the Mountain Mosaic of the Arts in the Pynelogs Cultural Centre grounds and beachside. Carnival-style fun runs through the afternoon, which includes the Windermere Fire Department’s annual boat-building contest and race.

Sparwood fireworksDistrict of Sparwood

Sparwood is hosting Canada Day Celebrations Friday July 1 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Sparwood Recreation Centre Arena. Canada Day Cupcakes, Singing O’Canada, Sparwood Skate Park BBQ Fundraiser, and much, much, more! Join in on the fun at the pool after the Canada Day events for a public swim from 1 – 4 p.m.

Fairmont Hot Springs

Canada Day fun is held in the courtyard at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort hot pools beginning at noon. Live music by L8, tons of things for the kids to do, a barbecue, puppets and cake await. At 10 p.m. sharp the skies light up with a fireworks display over the resort’s Indian Baths.

Fort Steele Heritage Town

fscandaymountatadaFort Steele Heritage Town celebrates Dominion Day with live music, family games, a barbecue, ‘The Happy Medium’, a live theatre show at 2 p.m. and cake! The summer season at Fort Steele is now in full swing and the hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

Panorama Mountain Resort

At 8 a.m. on the patio of the Great Hall, you can take part in a pancake breakfast. Also taking place at noon is the Panorama Fire Department fundraising barbecue, with plenty for the kids to do.

Village of Canal Flats

Canal Flats’ Canada Day celebration gets underway at 8 p.m. Friday. Everyone’s invited to the party! Come to the ball diamond at the Canal Flats Civic Centre and wish our country a Happy Birthday! There’ll be snacks and refreshments – and, of course, cake! As soon as the sun goes down, a giant fireworks display will light up the skies.

Village of Radium Hot Springs

music market on mainCanada Day coincides with the first Music & Market on Main for 2016, a weekly summer Friday evening event in Radium Hot Springs. The special evenings run every Friday until August 26.

The market runs from from 4-9 p.m. and music begins at 7 p.m., featuring talented local musicians. Each week, there’s a different artist, so be sure to catch all the performances. Bring the whole family – there’s something to make everyone smile.
