Cranbrook comes together to support local children  

 Cst. Mike Murray is back in the saddle, while local colleagues lock up Cranbrook’s citizens all to help kids in crisis next week.

The Cops for Kids Ride kicks off in Kelowna Friday, and joining the team again this year is local Mountie Cst. Mike Murray. Murray is joining the cycling team again this year to cycle across the region raising funds and awareness for local children facing illness, disability, or traumatic crisis.

He’s spent months training and fundraising for the journey which will bring the group of cyclists together to start their journey in Kelowna before making their way to the East Kootenay on Wednesday, September 16.

During the 10 days, the team will stop in communities across the province at community events organized to meet with the children who benefit from the fundraising efforts, and for the public to meet with these riders who have dedicated to much in order to pedal for the local kids. To help bolster their fundraising efforts, Tamarack Centre will be hosting a Jail & Bail event on Wednesday, September 16.

Local law-abiding citizens will be arrested, and placed in the mock-jail at the mall until they are able to raise their bail in the form of donations for Cops for Kids. This fun event is open to anyone who might be needing some time behind bars for an office offense or petty accusation, with revenge sentences always welcome. For anyone wanting to snitch on a friend or colleague, please email [email protected] to arrange an arrest.

The cycling team will be coming from Creston that day, due to arrive at the Cranbrook RCMP at 4 p.m. where they’ll be welcomed by local supporters and families who benefit from their fundraising efforts.

For Murray this ride provides incredible rewards. “Working with my colleagues to making a meaningful difference for local kids is the reason that I ride. When we stop in each community, we hear the stories of how our efforts have changed the trajectory of a child’s life, and that’s enough to get my legs over the mountain passes when the challenge in front of me seems impossible. If these kids can fight through their challenges on a daily basis, I’m happy to put in a bit of sweat to make their days just a little bit easier,” he said.
