A team of five cadets from 1746 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corp (RCACC) in Creston will be headed to Victoria on April 6 – 8, to compete in the Provincial Marksmanship Competition, after winning the Kootenay Zone Competition.

Due to the unpredictable weather and road conditions, the Sea Cadet Corps (RCSCC), Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) and Air Cadet Squadrons (RCACS) participated in “postal shoots” closer to their home units during March. Results were verified before winners were officially announced.

The team of five cadets had an aggregate score of 1,400. In the East, cadets from 552 RCACS, 1813 RCACC, both from Cranbrook, and 279 RCACS, Elk Valley also competed in this year’s competition.

In the West, 81 RCSCC and 131 RCSCC, 531 RCACS & 581 RCACS also competed. 531 Trail RCACS earned second place and 581 Castlegar RCACS earned third place. The top 10 individual cadets and top overall team in each zone competition will advance to the Provincial Competition for an opportunity to compete at the National Championship. This year the nationals will be held in BC.

“Marksmanship is a team sport as well as an individual challenge. You need your team to keep focused and help you learn,” said Sergeant Hansen.

The Cadet Program aims to develop in youth ages 12-18 the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
