Dry lightning sparks new fires

High winds and dry lightning posed a scary combo yesterday evening, July 23, with a couple of new fires the result.

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports there is a small spot fire (.01 hectare) in Crossing Creek, north of Elkford and a .86 ha fire at Spider Creek, northeast of Kitchener.

A .01 ha fire off the Upper Donald Road, northwest of Golden, is suspected to be human caused.

The Shepp Creek fire, started by lightning on July 19, remains active and is now nine ha in scale. Shepp Creek is located east of Elko.

The Verdant Creek fire in eastern Kootenay National Park and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park continues to burn, now at an estimated 4,126 ha. Mountain Assiniboine Provincial Park remains on evacuation alert.

On the west side of the Purcells, the fire in Glacier Creek, which was started by lightning July 10, is now at 70 ha and the fire at Winters Creek, northeast of Johnsons Landing, is now at 149 ha.
