Ejected passenger injured in crash near Fort Steele

Driver found to be impaired

A local woman in her 20s was severely injured after being ejected from a vehicle that crashed near Fort Steele last Wednesday.

On April 6, at approximately 12:55 p.m., Cranbrook RCMP, BC Highway Patrol and B.C. Emergency Services responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 93/95 near Fort Steele.

Upon arrival it was determined that a red Dodge pickup with three occupants left the highway and rolled, ejecting one of the passengers.

The ejected passenger, a woman in her twenties from the local area, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, however her condition has since improved, Cranbrook RCMP & BC Highway Patrol reported.

Police determined that the driver, a man in his thirties from the East Kootenay, was impaired. He was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries and subsequently complied with a blood demand.

The passenger remaining in the truck, a woman in her fifties from the local area, was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Cranbrook RCMP is continuing the impaired driving investigation while BC Highway Patrol is conducting the collision aspect of the file, with assistance from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. However, speed and impairment are believed to be the leading contributors. Road and weather conditions in the area of the crash were reportedly good, having happened on a straight stretch of highway, police stated.

Police urge all drivers to obey speed limits, drive sober, wear seatbelts and drive distraction-free every time you get behind the wheel.

Anyone with information about this collision, including any dashboard camera video, is asked to contact Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 (file 2022-2727) or BCHP Cranbrook at 250-420-4244 (file 2022-1392).
