Enter the Kootenay Country Fair Zucchini Races

The weather has been hot and combined with adequate watering your favourite garden zucchini could become a winner in the second annual Zucchini Races. The races are hosted by Save on Foods Cranbrook, during the 40th Kootenay Country Fair on September 10 at Fort Steele Heritage Town.

There has been a change to the dimensions of the wheelbase for the races. The race track (borrowed from Dirk with Wildsight), is not the same width as the former track. If you are building a racing Zucchini you will need a six-inch or 15 cm wide set of wheels.

The other way to get a set of wheels is to register between Sept. 2 and 9, in your age group (five to seven years, eight to 10 years, 11-13 years, 14 and over). Pick up your wheel kit (first come first receive) at Save on Foods Cranbrook, the host of this year’s races. Put the wheels together (with minimal help from a parent if you are on the younger side) and figure out a way to attach the Zucchini to the wheelbase. We encourage you to dress up your Zucchini to make the races more challenging and fun.

One more time:

  1. register at Save on Foods Cranbrook, or pull that favourite Zucchini from the garden.
  2. Put wheels on your zucchini. Practice on an incline to test your racer.
  3. Dress up your zucchini.
  4. Bring your parents and your zucchini racer to Fort Steele Heritage Town on Sunday, September 10 before 2 p.m.
  5. Wait patiently until your race is called near the Bandstand in Centre Field.
  6. Race your zucchini, cheer the other racers, take in the sights of the 40th Kootenay Country Fair and enjoy yourself.
