FWCP approves $6.1 million for 40 fish and wildlife projects

Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it community plans for sustainable ungulate populations

The Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) approved funding for a project led by the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it (Tobacco Plains Band), that will benefit ungulate populations, including elk, mule deer, and white-tailed deer by enhancing ecosystem health on community lands, where invasive plants and forest encroachment have degraded habitat. The project will see the development of a habitat management plan, a key step to future on-the-ground conservation actions.

“Habitat restoration is to support ungulate populations is extremely important,” said Crystal Klym, Columbia Region manager. “And the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it ungulate habitat management plan will provide a detailed overview of existing habitat as well as strategies for long-term conservation and restoration.”

Like all FWCP-funded projects, it aligns with the FWCP Columbia Region’s action plans, which identify local priorities and projects eligible for FWCP funding. This project to restore ungulate habitat is one of 40 projects—10 fish and 30 wildlife—approved by the FWCP’s Columbia Region board which approved $6.1 million in project funding for 2022-2023.

“We take a forward forward-looking approach that balances protecting past conservation efforts while contributing to the resilience of watersheds in the future,” said Crystal. “In every project, we remain focused on our overall mission to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by BC Hydro dams.”

The FWCP has approved approximately $9.8 million for 95 projects across its Coastal, Columbia, and Peace regions. Learn more about FWCP projects and results by visiting fwcp.ca and subscribe to the FWCP’s e-letter and newsletter at fwcp.ca/subscribe.

The FWCP is a partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of B.C., Fisheries & Oceans Canada, First Nations, and public stakeholders to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by BC Hydro dams. BC Hydro funds the FWCP annually to fulfill its applicable water-licence obligations in its Columbia Region.
