Great start to Teck Kootenay Cup season

The Teck Kootenay Cup Number 1 and 2 races, which took place on December 15-16 at the Black Jack Ski Trails in Rossland were a great success.

There was an excellent turnout with 117 skiers competing.

Teams came from Fernie, Invermere, Kimberley, Golden, New Denver, Nelson, Rossland, Slocan Valley, Kelowna, Spokane, Wash., and as far away as Ottawa, Ont.

The eight young athletes from Ottawa were on a skier exchange program between the Nakkertok Ski Club of Ottawa and clubs in the Kootenays. Racers ranged in age from four to 66.

Saturday’s races were interval start classic, with racers starting 15 seconds apart under great snow conditions and sunshine. Sunday’s mass start skate races saw heavy falling snow, which made for tougher skiing.

See the complete race results.

A big thank you to the 25 race volunteers who kept things running smoothly and to the many club members for home baking and the hot soups for the racers and volunteers. A huge thank you to all the people who made this a great weekend!

The Teck Kootenay Cup program is a series of races held each year in the East and West Kootenay.

Participating clubs accumulate points throughout the season. To follow the Club Aggregate Awards visit the Cross Country BC website.

Teck Kootenay Cup Numbers 3 and 4 will be hosted by the Fernie Nordic Society on January 5-6.

A big THANK YOU to Teck for sponsoring this amazing event!
