I hope the Conservatives act for all British Columbians

Letter to the Editor

After Saturday night’s results and the long campaign, I needed a day to recover. I played hockey Sunday night with the Babes on Blades, and that was the medicine I needed!

We have a huge riding, and I was on doorsteps almost every day from Revelstoke to Kimberley. Thank goodness it was such a beautiful fall, as people were willing to open their doors and have conversations.

Knocking on strangers’ doors is one of the most stressful acts, because you never know what the reception will be. I want to thank everyone for your kindness. Some people said they were voting for the Conservatives, then said ‘good luck’ as they closed the door. They could not help being polite! I am grateful for that.

When the election was called, I heard a pundit on the radio state that if we were still talking about the snap election in the last week of the campaign, the NDP would be in trouble. We were still talking about it, and the party felt the consequences of that call, and it was decisive.

But people were also talking about affordability, the forest, and healthcare, and I dearly hope this new government will work on solutions that build houses, improve access to health care and manage our forests into the future.

The Conservatives have a large majority and therefore can pass any legislation. I hope they are thoughtful and deliberate. I hope they act for the majority of British Columbians and understand that their role is to protect the vulnerable as well as stabilize the strong. I really hope they don’t pass legislation that puts major projects and massive federal investments at risk.

I congratulate Scott McInnis on his win, and I wish him the best. He is in government now and has the opportunity to be an advocate for this region and the people who live here.

Finally, thank you to the people who voted for me, volunteered, and supported the campaign. Your kind words and backing propped me up during this campaign. I could not have done it without you. Each night, writing thank-you emails to the people who helped during the day made the work feel more positive and more like teamwork.

Andrea Dunlop,

BC NDP Columbia River-Revelstoke candidate
